Installing
the Satellite Receiver Adapter Device Driver
The proper installation
of the Satellite Receiver Adapter device is an essential step in setting up
your DirecPC system. The method of installing the device driver
depends on the Windows operating system you are using. Please select
your operating system below to learn more about installing the Satellite Receiver
Adapter device driver.
Windows
95 | Windows 98 |
The Windows 95, and Windows 98 operating systems support Plug and Play to automatically
detect when new hardware has been added to your system. When new
hardware is added to your system, Windows needs to install the appropriate device
driver. The following steps describe a typical scenario for installing
the Satellite Receiver Adapter device driver under Windows 95, Windows 98.
- If you are using a
PCI Satellite Receiver Adapter, you must power off your computer and install
the adapter before installing the device drivers. If you are
using a USB Satellite Receiver Adapter, you may connect the adapter to your
computer with the computer powered on or off.
- Windows will detect
that new hardware has been installed and an Update Device Driver Wizard
will be displayed.
- The Update Device
Driver Wizard should provide the ability to specify a location to look for
the new software drivers. Insert your DirecPC CD-ROM into your
CD-ROM drive, then specify the location of your CD-ROM drive or the appropriate
path on your hard drive if you downloaded the DirecPC software. At
this point, Windows is looking for the dpcusb.inf file if you have
a USB adapter or oemset95.inf if you have a PCI adapter. Click
on the Next button to proceed.
- After Windows finds
the appropriate INF file, a dialog will appear stating that the Satellite
Receiver Adapter was found. Click on the Finish button
to complete the device driver installation.
- Windows may prompt
you to insert the Windows CD-ROM to retrieve required networking files. If
so, remove the DirecPC CD-ROM if it's in the CD-ROM driver and insert the
Windows CD-ROM.
- Near the end of the
driver installation, Windows will display a message indicating that dpcusb.sys
(if you have a USB adapter) or bicndis.sys (if you have a PCI adapter) could
not be found on the Windows CD-ROM. These files are located on
the DirecPC CD-ROM. Insert the DirecPC CD-ROM into your CD-ROM
drive, and enter the path to your CD-ROM drive (e.g d:\) or the or the appropriate
path on your hard drive if you downloaded the DirecPC software. Once
you have entered the correct path, press the OK button to proceed.
- If you have installed
a PCI Satellite Receiver Adapter, you will be prompted to restart your computer. If
you have installed a USB Satellite Receiver Adapter, you do not need to
restart your computer. After successfully installing the device
driver, you still need to install the DirecPC software to utilize your DirecPC
system.
Windows
NT 4.0
Only
the PCI Satellite Receiver Adapter is supported on Windows NT 4.0. Since
Windows NT 4.0 does not support Plug and Play, the PCI Satellite Receiver Adapter
device driver is installed during the DirecPC software installation process. Under
most circumstances, the DirecPC software installation should successfully install
the device driver. If the DirecPC software installation is unable
to install the device driver or you would like to manually install the driver,
the following steps describe manually installing the device driver.
- Open the Network Applet
from the Control Panel. (Start -> Settings -> Control
Panel then double-click on the Network icon.)
- After the Network
applet appears, click on the Adapters tab. Then click
on the Add... button.
- After the Select Network
Adapter appears, click on the Have Disk... button. Insert
the DirecPC CD-ROM into your CD-ROM drive, then specify the location of
your CD-ROM drive or the appropriate path on your hard drive if you downloaded
the DirecPC software and click the OK button. At this
point, Windows NT 4.0 is looking for the oemsetnt.inf file.
- A list will appear
indicating the available Network Adapters and the Satellite Receiver PCI
Adapter should be the only available option. Click on the OK
button to accept this adapter.
- You should now see
the Satellite Receiver PCI Adapter in the list of installed Network Adapters. Now
you need to configure a temporary IP address for the Satellite Receiver
PCI Adapter. Click on the Protocols tab to install and
configure the TCP/IP protocol.
- If the TCP/IP protocol
is not already installed, click on the Add... button to install the
TCP/IP protocol. Find TCP/IP protocol from the available list
and press the OK button. You may be prompted to insert
the Windows NT 4.0 CD-ROM to retrieve required networking files.
- Once the TCP/IP protocol
is installed, select the TCP/IP protocol from the protocols list and press
the Properties button. Once the TCP/IP Properties dialog
appears, select the Satellite Receiver PCI Adapter from the Adapters combo
box.
- Choose the Specify
an IP Address option and enter 10.0.0.2 as the IP address and 255.0.0.0
as the subnet mask. Do not enter an address in the Default Gateway
field. Press the OK button to save this configuration.
- You will be prompted
to restart your computer. After restarting your computer, you
still need to install the DirecPC software to utilize your DirecPC system.
